The WordPress “Site Health” Page

by FIRESPIKE LLC | Aug 16, 2021 | HOMM Newsletter

In 2019, WordPress introduced its version 5.2, which included a new tool for monitoring issues that might affect a website’s security and performance. Called “Site Health”, the tool now includes both a summary panel on a site’s WordPress dashboard and a page that lists all the potential issues that it has found.
The good news for FireSpike’s “Hands-On Monthly Maintenance” customers is that we are already checking, every month, for the most common issues that Site Health reports. These include:

  • Keeping the WordPress software up to date
  • Regularly updating plugins
  • Removing unused plugins
  • Regularly updating the site theme
  • Removing unused themes while also keeping just one other theme available as a backup

FireSpike already removes some of the potential Site Health issues because of the standard offering we provide in our website hosting.

  • Keeping the server software up to date, particularly running the most current version of PHP. (The current recommended minimum version for WordPress is PHP 7.4.)
  • Secure hosting. ALL sites hosted with FireSpike are provided FREE “LetsEncrypt” security.

(These may need to be addressed separately if you are not using FireSpike’s hosting, which is available included in the cost of the HOMM services.)

In addition to the items recommended by WordPress, the Site Health page may list issues flagged by plugins. These issues may or may not be critical, and are often intended just to improve the functions performed by a single plugin.

It’s important to remember that the Site Health screen may say “needs improvement” for things that are neither urgent nor critical. Regardless, we will review those issues and mitigate the ones we can.

After all: the entire point of FireSpike providing regular ongoing maintenance is to keep your sites purring along like happy kitties.

Reviewing and mitigating relevant items from your website’s “Site Health” page is included in ALL LEVELS of FireSpike’s Hands-On Monthly Maintenance services.
